## How to calculate the cumulative grade point average of the 4 . system

### 1. What is a credit?

Is a quantity that determines the amount of knowledge and skills that students accumulate in 15 credit hours. Accordingly, credit is a measure of a student’s study time, classified into three types according to teaching and learning forms and determined as follows:

- One credit hour for class is equal to one class period and two self-study periods
- One practice credit hour is equal to 02 practice periods and 01 self-study period
- One credit hour of compulsory self-study is equal to three compulsory but assessed self-study periods.

The tuition fee per credit will depend on each university, some are low and some are high.

### 2. What are accumulated points?

Cumulative score is the average score of all subjects in your entire course. I like to call it that, but it’s similar to your grade point average for the whole year when you were a student.

### 3. How to calculate the cumulative GPA

- “A” is the average grade point average of each subject for each semester, or A can also be the cumulative grade point average.
- “i” is the ordinal number of the subjects in the curriculum.
- “ai” is the average score of the “i” subject.
- “ni” is the symbol for the number of credits of that “i” course.

### 4. How to convert points on the 4th grade scale and grade the course

– Normally, on a 10-point scale, if students have a cumulative score of less than 4.0, they will retake or retake the course. This is up to the school to decide the number of times the student will retake the exam or will retake the subject without retaking the exam.

- From 4.0 – less than 5.0 is converted to a letter score of D and by a factor of 4 will be 1.0.

- From 8.0 to less than 8.5, the letter score is B+ and the coefficient of 4 is 3.5.
- From 8.5 to less than 9.0, the letter grade is A and the coefficient of 4 is 3.7.
- From 9.0 and above, the letter score is A+ and the coefficient of 4 is 4.0.

(Depending on each university, there will be additional points of C+, B+, A+ but the vast majority of schools convert the points as we give).

– After each semester and after accumulating enough credits, based on the cumulative average score, students’ academic performance is classified into the following categories:

- Excellent: A cumulative GPA of 3.60 to 4.00;
- Excellent: Cumulative GPA from 3.20 to 3.59;
- Good: The cumulative GPA ranges from 2.50 to 3.19;
- Average: Cumulative overall GPA from 2.00 to 2.49;
- Weak: The cumulative GPA is less than 2.00 but not yet subject to expulsion.

The way to refer to the letter score system A, B+, B, C+, C, D+, D and F of some universities in our country is very reasonable today, because this conversion method minimizes the too large gap between 2 score levels. If applying the scale according to Regulation 43, it does not reflect the student’s learning ability.

For example, according to the undivided letter scale, 2 students, one with 7.0/10 and the other with 8.4/10, are all ranked at the same B rank, although the strength of these two students is very different.

With a multi-level letter scale, students benefit more. In addition to objectively classifying students’ academic ability, this scale also saves many students from the risk of being forced to drop out or not have their graduation recognized.

For example, a student in the learning process, 50% of the courses get a D and 50% of the courses get a C. According to the undivided letter scale, this student is not eligible to graduate, because the cumulative GPA of the whole course is only 1.5. But applying a multi-level letter scale, with 50% of the courses getting a D+ and 50% of the courses getting a C+, students are eligible to graduate, because the cumulative GPA of the whole course is 2. ,0.

### 5. The 4 point scale is the process evaluation scale

The course assessment in training according to HTTC is a process assessment with course exam scores, which may only account for 50% of the proportion of course scores. This makes students have to study, test, practice, experiment throughout the semester, not rely on the results of a risky exam, but have many opportunities to pass without studying. Therefore, failing course scores must be re-learned to evaluate all partial scores and retake the exam, not simply organizing the 2nd extra module final exam.

### 6. The 4 point scale is a clean rating scale

The change from a 10-point scale to a letter scale (A, B, C, D, F) is to classify the test results, to classify them into assessment levels, and to define what is a pass and fail score. This letter scale is an intermediate scale. Next, switch from the letter scale to the 4 point scale, we note the F score. The F score in the 10 scale has a value from 0 to 3.9 but with a 4 point scale it has only 0. But the value is 0. 0 is still involved in calculating the semester grade point average. This is the pure training nature of HTTC (it does not accept any result below 4 out of 10).

### 7. Regulations on test scores, online thesis defense

With the form of online assessment (online exam), when applied, it must be honest, fair and objective like face-to-face assessment, and contribute no more than 50% of the weight of the course score.

Particularly, the organization of defending and evaluating projects and theses is carried out online with a higher weight when the following additional conditions are met:

- The assessment is carried out through an expert panel of at least 3 members;
- The online form of protection and assessment is agreed upon by board members and learners;

Students who fail the exam must receive a score of 0

Students who are absent from the exam and are assessed without a valid reason must receive a score of 0. Students who are absent for a valid reason may take the exam, be assessed in another round, and be counted for the first time.

### 8. How to calculate points and rank university academic performance from May 3, 2021

The Ministry of Education and Training has issued a new Regulation on training at university level in Circular No. 08/2021/TT-BGDĐT. Accordingly, from May 3, 2021, when this Circular officially takes effect, university students will apply the following regulations on academic ranking.

1. Evaluation of course grades

Article 9 of the Regulation on training at the university level provides for the assessment and calculation of course scores as follows:

Component points are calculated on a scale of 10

For each module, students are assessed through a minimum of two component points, for courses with a volume of less than 02 credits, there may be only one assessment point. Component scores are rated on a 10-point scale.

The assessment method, assessment form and weight of each component point are specified in the detailed outline of each module.

Regulations on test scores, online thesis defense

With the form of online assessment (online exam), when applied, it must be honest, fair and objective like face-to-face assessment, and contribute no more than 50% of the weight of the course score.

Particularly, the organization of defending and evaluating projects and theses is carried out online with a higher weight when the following additional conditions are met:

– The assessment is carried out through a professional panel of at least 3 members;

– Online form of protection and assessment is agreed upon by council members and learners;

– The progress of the online protection session is recorded, fully recorded and archived.

How to calculate and convert course points

The course grade is calculated from the sum of the sub-scores multiplied by the respective weights, rounded to one decimal place, and graded letter grade.

– Graded pass grade, applicable to the courses that are included in the academic average, including:

- A: from 8.5 to 10.0;
- B: from 7.0 to 8.4;
- C: from 5.5 to 6.9;
- D: from 4.0 to 5.4.

– For subjects that are not included in the average score, not graded, it is required to achieve P from: 5.0 or higher.

– Class does not meet F: less than 4.0.

– Some special cases where graded letters are used, which are not included in the academic average:

I: The score is not complete due to the permission to postpone the test and examination;

X: Incomplete score due to insufficient data;

R: Course grades are exempted and credit is recognized.

2. How to calculate and convert the average score of the semester and school year

Pursuant to Clause 2, Article 10 of the Regulation on university-level training, in order to calculate the average score, the letter score of the course is converted to the score as follows:

- – A converted to 4;
- – B converted to 3;
- – C converted to 2;
- – D converted to 1;
- – F converted to 0.

Letters that do not fall into one of the above cases will not be included in the semester, school year or cumulative grade point average. Courses that are not in the requirements of the training program are not included in the criteria for assessing student learning outcomes.

Thus, for schools that apply the conversion of the student’s average score on a 4-point scale, students will consider the component scores and the average score of the course on a 10-point scale, then grade the course by letter scores and grade points. Convert the corresponding 4 point scale to calculate the average score of the semester and the whole year.

In addition, Clause 2, Article 10 also stipulates that, for training institutions that are training according to the annual system and using a 10-point scale, the average points shall be calculated based on the course scores on a 10-point scale, without converting the points to scale letters.

3. How to rank university academic performance

Under Clause 5, Article 10 of the University Training Regulations, students are classified according to their semester average, academic year average or cumulative grade point average as follows:

On a four-point scale:

- From 3.6 to 4.0: Excellent;
- From 3.2 to close to 3.6: Good;
- From 2.5 to close to 3.2: Good;
- From 2.0 to close to 2.5: Moderate;
- From 1.0 to near 2.0: Weak;
- Below 1.0: Poor.

On a 10-point scale:

- From 9.0 to 10.0: Excellent;
- From 8.0 to 9.0: Excellent;
- From 7.0 to near 8.0: Good;
- From 5.0 to near 7.0: Moderate;
- From 4.0 to near 5.0: Weak;
- Below 4.0: Poor.
